Dr. Cody Kalmon
Dr. Cody Kalmon grew up an hour away from Bloomington in the small town of Nineveh, Indiana. As a child it was clear that he had a passion for animals. He raised pigs, chickens, goats, and ducks in 4H and served as the president of his group. He loved spending his summers working with his animals and shadowing a local veterinarian. After high school Dr. Cody completed a business degree from Ball State University. He went on to obtain his DVM at Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine. During school his love of surgery grew and he was awarded the Excellence in Small Animal Surgery Award during his forth year clinical rotations. After graduation he accepted an associate veterinarian position at Arlington Heights Veterinary Hospital in Bloomington, Indiana. He immediately fell in love with Bloomington's beautiful nature, Lake Monroe, and small town atmosphere. Along with his then pregnant wife, young daughter and two dogs he started Furry Friends Veterinary Hospital in the summer of 2017 with a goal to provide excellent high quality medicine and surgery customized to his clients' needs. He is passionate about veterinary medicine and his strong interest in surgery, dentistry, oncology, cytology, endocrinology and ultrasound allow him to provide exceptional care for all of his patients. He enjoys serving his community and is interested in educating youth. Please visit our Events & Specials page to learn more about youth education opportunities with Dr. Cody.
Dr. Katie Kelly
Dr. Katie Kelly’s introduction into veterinary medication came with a start, or perhaps a fall. Dr. Kelly points to a moment when, as a young girl, she discovered a baby bird with a broken wing. Fashioning a splint around the injury, Katie took the bird out daily to test its strength. On the day the bird flew away young Katie knew her calling was to serve those creatures who needed mending but couldn’t speak for themselves. Dr. Kelly was born and grew up on the north side of Indianapolis. Hailing from a family of IU alum, she spent a great deal of time in Bloomington as a kid and knew she would one day join the ranks and become a Hoosier herself. While earning a degree in biology at Indiana University she met her now-husband Nick, and not so long after they knew they would return to Bloomington, the perfect place to raise their family. She would go on to earn her B.S. in Biology. Dr. Kelly then attended the Purdue University College of Veterinary Medicine where she earned her DVM. She was also awarded the Class of 1983 Award for excellence in practice in the face of overwhelming obstacles, an award given in part because she had her first child while in vet school. Dr. Kelly is especially interested in small animal surgery, animal nutrition, and animal behavior. Shortly after joining the Furry Friends team in 2019, Dr. Kelly earned her Fear Free Certification, making her the first veterinarian in Bloomington to do so! The Fear Free Certification is a program that gives veterinary professionals advanced tools to create a better patient experience by minimizing fear, anxiety, and stress. Fear Free practices (like positive reinforcement, low stress handling techniques, and mindfully selected sedatives when needed) are used throughout the patient visit, and a Fear Free certified professional can provide tools to owners to avoid anxiety triggers during the visit, on the way to a visit, and even at home. In her free time, she enjoys family time with her husband Nick, daughter Penelope, dog Ellie, and cat Leia. She also enjoys reading, playing and coaching sports (golf, soccer, martial arts), and is an avid Disney enthusiast.
Practice Manager/ Co-Founder
Whitney also grew up an hour away from Bloomington. She is very excited to call Bloomington her permanent home and to be able to serve the community through Furry Friends Veterinary Hospital. She graduated in December 2007 from Ball State University with a business degree. After college she married Dr. Cody and had various positions in marketing, management, sales, event planning and office assistance as they moved around for his schooling. She was supportive of Dr. Cody pursuing his dream to become a veterinarian and was an integral part in starting Furry Friends Veterinary Hospital. Whitney spends most of her time at home or arround town with their two young daughters, but she can be found arround the hospital part time, often with a baby on her hip. In their free time, Whitney and Dr. Cody enjoy boating on Lake Monroe with their family and dogs (Scooter- a schnoodle and Izzy- a Goldendoodle).
